A towbar looks like a simple lump of metal bolted to the back of your car, and in a way it is. Don’t Forget the Wiring
People obsess over the bar and forget the electrics, then wonder why their trailer lights won’t come on. There are two common setups. A 7-pin connector covers the basic lights, while a 13-pin also runs things like reversing lights and a caravan fridge. If there’s any chance you’ll be towing a modern caravan, just go for the 13-pin from the start. Adding it later is a pain.
Newer cars also need the wiring to talk to the car’s own computer, otherwise you’ll get warning lights flashing up on the dashboard. A proper dedicated wiring kit handles this. A cheap universal one often doesn’t, so this isn’t the place to save twenty quid.
Know What Your Car Can Legally Pull
Every car has a maximum towing weight, and going over it isn’t just risky, it’s against the law. Your licence matters too.
